MAY 2023 NEWS: GEAR UP Taskforce Launches New Report Addressing Gender Oppression in Manitoba’s Audio Recording and Music Production Sector
MAY 3, 2023: The GEAR UP: Gender Equity in Audio Recording and Music Production taskforce releases Collectively Supporting Change: Addressing Gender Inequity in Audio Production in Manitoba, a new report that provides a snapshot of the local recording industry and suggestions for how to ensure safer, more respectful working environments, and increased participation of women and gender diverse producers and engineers in the industry.
The taskforce was formed in early 2022 to address the need for real and long-lasting change for women and gender diverse people working in audio recording and music production in Manitoba. Members include Ashley Bieniarz, Hill Kourkoutis, Lana Winterhalt, Monica Gadsby, Rayannah Kroeker, Sierra Noble, and Vanessa Peters.
The taskforce worked with J.Hogue & Associates to create the report, sponsored by Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film & Music, which have provided financial and administrative support. Both sponsors are committed to accepting the recommendations of the taskforce, sharing them with the community, and doing their best to incorporate them into their own policies and programming.

FEMME HOUSE
Femme House fosters more equitable opportunity for women and gender-expansive individuals in the technical and behind the scenes areas of music. They are creating the future producers, mixers, engineers, DJs, artists, and executives of the industry by providing education and scholarships, cultivating community, propagating visual representation, and offering professional development opportunities.
WOMEN'S AUDIO MISSION
Women’s Audio Mission is a San Francisco and Oakland-based recording studio and nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of women and gender-expansive people in music/audio production and creative technology, fields in which they are critically underrepresented. Women's Audio Mission has a multitude of links and resources, partnerships, and information available for aspiring producers and audio engineers globally.

GENDER AMPLIFIED
Gender Amplified is a non-profit organization that aims to celebrate women in music production, raise their visibility and develop a pipeline for girls and young women to get involved behind the scenes as music producers.
The movement also connects passion for music with technical skills that can be used in a wide range of scientific and arts based fields, areas in which women are traditionally underrepresented.
